ΤHATCH

Το thatch (καλάμι θατς) είναι ένα οικολογικό υλικό, με φυσική ομορφιά και μεγάλη διάρκεια ζωής. Κατασκευάζεται από λεπτά καλάμια της Νοτίου Αφρικής (θαμνόχορτο ή σπαθόχορτο).

Το thatch, όπως άλλωστε και όλα τα άλλα είδη ξηρής βλάστησης, αποτελεί το βασικό υλικό μιας πανάρχαιας μεθόδου κατασκευής στεγάστρων, σκεπών αλλά και τοίχων, που έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί τόσο σε τροπικά όσο και σε εύκρατα κλίματα ήδη από το Μεσαίωνα. Αντίθετα με την εντύπωση που δίνει, το thatch δεν αποτελεί ένα εύφλεκτο υλικό: καίγεται αρκετά αργά, όπως ένα κλειστό βιβλίο και μπορεί μάλιστα να χρησιμοποιηθεί ως επιβραδυντικό φωτιάς.

Σε ομπρέλες και κιόσκια, τα λεπτά καλάμια thatch συγκολλούνται από τη μια πλευρά με ένα εύκαμπτο είδος φυσικού καουτσούκ, δημιουργώντας παραλληλόγραμμα πλακίδια (tiles). Τα πλακίδια αυτά διαθέτουν κατά μήκος αυτής της εύκαμπτης ταινίας συνδετήρες από καουτσούκ, που επιτρέπουν την τοποθέτησή τους με ευκολία επάνω σε κάθε είδους μεταλλικό σκελετό ή κατασκευή (ομπρέλες, κιόσκια, στέγαστρα κ.ά.). Η τοποθέτηση των πλακιδίων αυτών πάνω στην ομπρέλα δημιουργεί διάφορα επίπεδα, δίνοντας την εντύπωση κλίμακας.
